can you regrade with fine sand for topdressing?

I have a fairly well graded back yard but have a few spots that are not allowing me to cut low at all. Can I topdress this area with fine sand to level the areas. Will this help me eventually cut the grass low to its original sod height?
Thanks

Yes, sand works. It doesn’t necessarily have to be fine sand. Just don’t use more than 1/3 inch per week or you risk smothering the grass. Give the grass a chance to grow up through it.
