Traffic area’s & aeration

I have a St Augustine lawn & areas w/ heavy traffic the grass is green & living but never gets any height & is somewhat bare. There is no way to avoid the traffic. What can I do ? Is overseeding w/ Bermuda in these areas a possibility ? Would it look right w/ the St Augustine ? If I can do this when is the best time of year ?
Also I saw some sandals w/ spikes for aerating, would they be worth the investment ?
Thank you

anjsjax, you might try a dwarf variety of St. Augustine. Floratam is rather poor under traffic, but varieties with higher shoot density such as Seville and Delmar have much better wear tolerance. I suppose that Palmetto would also be in the tolerant group.
