St. Augustine Lawn damage from using wrong Winterizer

November put on a bag of Winterizer Scotts Weed & Feed and Bonus S for ST. Augustine. We noticed a few brown spots but we thought it was from the cold weather we were having temps in the low 30’s a few days of 27 for short periods of time. In the meantime my husband became to wonder about what he had put down and got out the bag and in small print he read for grasses other then St. Augustine ( large 50lb bag with small print about ST. Augustine that I need glasses to read and next to the Bonus S for St. Augustine in Walmart) and he threw out the bag because he did not want me to accidental use anymore. Spring came and our lawn has gone from the best in the area to the worst. We have large areas of brown spots and yellowing of the grass we have other areas around the trees and near the house where we did not put the winterizer that are just fine. The grass in the brown areas seems to be growing but the blades are yellow. We have raked the thatch and have put on milorganite and miracle-gro and some black cow and threw in some rye grass to protect it from the sun. We tested the soil and the ph running neutral, N medium, Phosphorus medium, and potash low. Is there anything we can do other then watering and rain to help stimulate the roots of the grass and get the runners going??????? We are trying to save the grass without getting a new lawn.

what do you think of epsom salts for the lawn???

Rye grass is too competitive for a severely stressed lawn. Keep using organic nitrogen (Milorganite) to aid recovery.

Rake up the dead grass. St Augustine does not like to grow over dead St Augustine (but will gladly grow over concrete!).

Use a liquid fertilizer and put down a SLOW release fertilizer – probably something from LESCO like a 16-x-8 or similar.
