st augustine runners

my st augustine lawn sprouts runners on top of the lawn, but only in the summer. i suspect that this is caused by either temperature, moisture or photoperiod. can these runners be controlled with verticutting or in some other manner?

i am located in palm beach county in florida and the majority of my lawn is floratam, but it is an older house and some of the lawn was sodded several years ago.
