St. Augustine lawn w/annual ryegrass

When does this annual ryegrass finally die? I seeded my St. Augustine lawn in the winter with Pennington’s annual ryegrass to keep the lawn green. And it worked wonderfully. But now the St. Augustine is greening up, but the ryegrass just doesnt go away. I’ve been told to be more patient, that the St.Augustine will choke it out as it grows. Also been told that the ryegrass dies with the heat. I made sure I bought annual so that it would go away.
When does it go away around here? May? June?
It drives me nuts because I added St. Augustine to 1/2 of my sidewalk curb that was bare, while the other half has St. Augustine w/ann.ryegrass… so you can imagine how a half dark green and half bright green sidewalk look! and the ryegrass grows straight up!
I am in southern california, zone 9, sunset 19.
