Replace fescue with Zoysia – wild onion
adi – posted 16 March 2012 07:02
Last year we re-did the front yard with zoysia zeon. This year we are planning on doing the same thing in the back yard. The back yard is full of weeds, predominantly wild onion.
What is the best way to get rid of these wild onions and prepare the ground?

The best thing to do would be to throw down some grass/weed killer over the entire area. Wait a couple days and Rototill the entire area. I would also buy some good quaility top soil and throw it down prior to laying the sod.

This year I was having a terrible time with wild onions coming up in my Zoysia yard… and nothing seemed to kill them. Then I read a post on another forum that raising the pH with lime would get rid of the onions.
I applied pelletized lime… a little heavy but no ill effect on the Zoysia… and in just a couple of weeks the onions disappeared!

I read on other forums that keeping the tops broke off them would starve them to death. I broke mine off all last spring until they stopped coming back. I’ll let you know how it did. There’s nothing you can spray them with to kill them. I also dug some hills up, but those were not in a planted area.

I also buried some under thick pinestraw and took all their sunlight away. That may have worked, I ‘ll know this fall. But those were in an area that was not planted with grass.
