Long Term St. Augustine Care

I own a ten year old house in San Antonio (lots of rock as a base) with St. Augustine grass. The ground seems to be getting very hard and I seem to be getting a lot of unwanted bermuda. Do I need to add sand to the yard to provide a healthier base? If yes, is there a specific type of sand that should be added?
