ice plant to grass?

Does anyone have a recommendation for a simple guide to tearing out ice plant and planting grass seed (in San Diego)? Is it a difficult process?

I never pulled out ice plant but my mother did. As I recall it was a tedious process to claw out the roots.
I wonder what would happen if you rented a mower and mowed it down; then a tiller to till it all up; followed by raking the roots out.

I think I’d try to get the top layer out before tilling it though.
