I overseeded a this fall with winter rye and the yard really looks good. Nice a green. Although I have noticed other properties where the blades of the rye are thinker, larger then mine. Do I need to fertilize this winter to help the growth? My yard is small and do not mind the mowing.
thanks,Scott

that’s because it hasn’t been fertilized. i always fert. mine on a monthly basis and it looks great. soil test first, but you probably need to use a high nitrogen fert. at the rate of 1 pound of actual nitrogen per 1000 sq. ft. for ex: 25-5-10 would be used at 4 pounds per 1000 sq. ft. to equal 1 pound of nitrogen. you can do the math on any other type of fert. you might use…

Thanks for repling. I fertilized it yesterday. I must say the yard does look good. I also called Texas A&M and for the soil analysis. Bags are here and will mail in sample later in the month.
Thanks again & Happy Holidays..

it’s also a possibility that you sowed it too thick. this, along with different varities of rye, will cause a thinner blade- might want to check for fungus, too.

Now, I could have thrown too much seed. The first go around I threw by hand and the yard looked like a bad chiapet. Then I purchased a drop down spreader and dropped another big back on it. Do get me wrong, it looks good, a dark green, just wondering about the size of the blades. Thanks for the info.
