Should I Plant Zoysia In NC

Hi. I live in Charlotte, NC, and my yard is a mess, year after year. I typically have planted fescues because everyone else does so in my area, and it is supposed to be good in a variety of conditions. Part of my yard in front of the house gets hot sun, so the grass bakes and dies, and then the weeds move in. Part of my yard is in some decent shade beneath a canopy of a few walnuts, dogwoods, and one tall tulip poplar. What I want is a nice carpet of grass that is not to coarse to walk on, do well in a variety of conditions, and will choke the snot out of my weeds. Will Zoysia do the trick?

Thanks!

I just discovered a Zoysia called ShadowTurf that grow will in shade and sun. The only problem is you have buy plugs and let it grow in slowly. It is like a fine bladed Emerald Zoysia.

See the posts on “New Jamur Zoysia Lawn”. I live near Raleigh, NC and sodded 6000 sq ft on June 19, 2009. It looks great. I have some shaded areas and they are doing good. I don’t believe I have a weed in the entire lawn. If you want to know what Jamur Zoysia looks like, go to www.theturfgrassgroup.com and click on JaMur Zoysia or Zeon Zoysia and then click on gallery. Look at the photos. Mine came from Lawson Turf Farm near Darlington, SC. They have some photos of them harvestsing the sod and it looks great in the photos as well. Hope this helps.

Thanks for both responses.

Isn’t sodding really expensive? I am sure it looks great, but what sort of cost would I be looking at? My house sits on about 1/2 an acre, and only 1/4 of that is grass. I don’t know the square footage.

I live 35 miles east of Charlotte NC and converted from fescue to zoysia about three years ago. I seeded my lawn with Companion Zoysia which is now called Compadre Zoysia. I like the grass a great deal it can take the heat with very little water, have very little weed problems, grows slow which means less mowing. I let my grass grow long in the summer so I only mow maybe once a month. The grass looks good from May through the first frost which in the area usually occurs in late October to the first of November. The only thing you will have to contend with is the dormant period in the winter months.

Although some seed in the spring I seeded my yard in mid August which seemed to work okay. Before I sowed I sprayed and killed all the weeds then watered the area and let the weeds re sprout and then sprayed again just to make sure I got a good weed kill.

Once you till the soil and plant the seed will take 14 – 21 days to germinate and they must be kept moist which means you will probably have to water two or three times a day.

I discovered this thread when Googling to determine if I should in fact go ahead with plans to install Zoysia. I’ve received quotes for the installation and was about to hit the “go” button. The “before” pictures in this thread made me realize how much I prefer a non-lawn yard. I’m glad you found what you wanted and I think I have too. “To each his own.”

Absolutely. It will do great around the Charlotte, NC area.
