I recently purchased a home on the river with a lot trees on the property. I currently have no grass and I would like to develope a landscape design. Are there any types of turf that can thrive in a predominately shaded area?

Usually not much will grow in shade.Oak trees also give off a tanic acid which falls from tree to ground. This is detrimental to grass. Also depends on location.Check with County agent, but do not expect much if shade is dense.

A shade mix Fescue or Perennial Ryegrass

Also there is a new type of Zoysia that is out or will soon be for shade. Call your sod farm to see if they have it. But first email back to let me know what the name is so I can tell you if they are telling you the truth. Some sod farms will tell you that zoysia will grow good in shade. That is true to a point, but not completely shaded.

I called a couple of sod farms and they both told me that Palmetto grass would be the best for me. Only one of the two actually carried Zoyasia, but he said it’s less shade tolerant than the Palmetto.

if Palmetto was reccomended, I am assuming you live in the south, possibly Florida. If this is the case, Palmetto does very well in the shade. Another benefit of Palmetto is that the leaves tend to be small and dense which will give your yard a beautiful carpet-like look to it, provided it is well kept and maitained.

What is the name of this “new” type of zoysia grass. I live in central Florida and the only types of Zoysia that I have been able to find are “empire” and “empress” zoysia? Thanks for the help!!

I’ll try to get ahold of the sod farm that told me the name. I have forgotten what he told me, but all I know right now is that he said that there will be soon a Zoysia that will tolerate shade

Thanks frenchman, I would really appreciate the name when you get it. Right now, I’m in the process or converting my St. Augustine yard to empire zoysia. I live just outside Orlando, FL. If you have any tips for me I would like to hear them. Thanks again!!

The name of the Zoysia is Zeon Zoysia. It requires only 4hrs of sunlight a day.

Frenchman, I recently installed empire zoysia on my front lawn where I’ll probably get filtered sunlight throughout the entire day (the sun path runs directly over my house, lenghtwise). Is filtered light sufficient for this type of grass?

Thanks,New Zoysia User
