We have a lake house where the grass is being torn up by armadillos. Does anyone have a solution other than a shotgun? We have tried traps with limited success (have caught 3 in 2 years).

armadillos are nocturnal creatures that have very poor eye sight but a great sense of smell. They are also ranging animals that cover the same range until it is played out and move on to the next range.

Because of there great sense of smell and the fact they are very blind. traps should have long runners to guide them to the Earth worm bait they are smelling. These runners should be set in a V fashion to guide them right to the trap. Earth worms from a Fishing bait store can be placed in a Nylon stocking and the trap should be baited every night. In the morning remove the bait and place it in the refrigerator until that night should you not have a hit. Runners can be made from any thing but a 4 X 4 wood beam works well.

Malathion the last I checked, was still labelled for turf. It just plain stinks and that smell will drive armadillos away. Banning the outside perimeter of your property with a 10 ft wide treatment of Malathion will keep armadillos from crossing the Malathion perimeter.

Hi, I don't know if I'm right but I think armadillos' preferred food are earthworms and all kind of worms. You can try worm control.

Oh sorry, I was confused. I was thinking about moles instead of armadillos, haha.
