I am thinking of going to graduate school to get a Masters in Turf. Is it worth the extra time in school to do so? So many of the Turf proffesionals I know are self taught and many do not even have a Turf degree. How much will a Masters in turf help me in the future in terms of finding a job?

bshaver, it depends on what you want to do with your education. There are a number of M.S. graduates in turfgrass here in Florida, who were taught by the late Dr. G.C. Horn and others in the 1960s. Those students’ oustandingly successful careers essentially started with their M.S. degrees, and they advanced to become owners of companies serving the $8+ billion turf business in Florida. An M.S. degree may not be the calling card one needs for a job as a golf course superintendent, and it will definitely not make up for lack of experience. But in the hands of a self-starting person who also gains diverse experience along the way, an M.S. degree opens the doors of opportunity that the average person isn’t even looking for.
