Help. We live in Lakewood, Colorado. We built a large retaining wall in our backyard last summer and leveled out our 3000 square foot backyard. But it wasn’t ready for sod until late September, and we were under heavy water restrictions, so we decided to wait to lay sod until this Spring after we had recieved some moisture. So far…no moisture. What are my options, if we have water restrictions this summer. really want to put some sort of grass in our yard, we have 2 young children and three dogs, and the dirt and mud they track in is awful. Not to mention not near as nice to play on. Any suggestions as to what type of sod would work best, or even if I can lay any type of sod in these conditions?

Consider Buffalo-grass. It thrives on low/no watering over long periods.

All you have to do is to apply for a watering variance with your local municipality (City). They may have requirements such as proof of applying so many cubic yards of compost per square foot of new sod. They do this because ultimately a good soil prep will help the new sod/seed take easier and require less water to root!
