Hello,

My golf course was just bought by new owners, they wish to upgrade the Superintendent’s staff. I thought turf-grass interns would be a good idea. How do I find the right Colleges for this? We are located in Miami Fl. Thanks in advance.

There are several good turfgrass colleges in the United States. Iowa State, Michigan State, Penn State, Purdue, Cornell are probably the top 5 turfgrass 4 year schools in the US. If i was a GCS these are the schools i would definatly look at first.

Those are some great schools for turfgrass, but I would have to add the University of Florida with three locations for the turf science program. I mention this not only because it is good, but also because I am the student advisor for the Fort Lauderdale location.http://grove.ufl.edu/~turf/

Mississippi State also has a good following, and so does Lake City Community College which is north of Gainesville, specifically for golf course management, plus there are good academic programs at Georgia, Nebraska, and Washington, to name just a few.

Anyone embarking on a career in golf course management needs to be forewarned that the market is overcrowded, and I would encourage you to be open as to your employment prospects. There are many more jobs in addition to golf courses, so mature students with good communication skills and a combination of “street smarts” and “book smarts” do need to apply.

Good luck!

Phil
