I recently installed a sod base in my front yard. I have always been impressed with the design patterns used by baseball parks and I would like to emulate them. How is the grass cut to give it a “diamond like appearance?Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

kcrump, David Mellor’s book Picture Perfect: Mowing Techniques for Lawns, Landscapes and Sports ($24.46) shows you how to make elaborate lawn patterns. He developed his widely photographed patterns as Sports Turf Manager for the Milwaukee Brewers, and he is now with the Boston Red Sox Baseball Club.

In general, the cool-season grasses such as perennial ryegrass pattern very nicely, because the leaves are more flexible and will hold an angle, while bermudagrass tends more to stand back up again after it’s been mown. One of the challenges of developing a mowing pattern is to find a way to mow the turf so you don’t have to do too much back-tracking around the perimeter. There are other tricks in the book.

You can do lots of other things, too!
