Hello to all:

I just left day one of the Green Industry Expo in Atlantic City. I have some intresting things to report:

From The USGA:

There are several research projects in the works. To many to remember, but the three that struck me as promising to all turffers were these:

In Arizona they are experimenting with a turfgrass called Saltgrass. Puts down roots 8 FEET deep! Making it very heat tolerant as well as drought tolerant. On the research plots they have not watered for two months (July and August). Better salt tolerance than seashore paspalum. It may be a few years away from commercial availability, but shows promise.

Also, they are trying to cross breed the turf that grows around the geyser’s at Yellowstone National with other turf that could be used in hot situations. The turf there grows and thrives in soil temps that reach 115 degrees F.

There is also an improved cold tolerant Bermuda from Oklahoma that stays green in temps in the teens. They showed a slide of a beautiful green plot with the temps at 18 degrees.

Many of these things are yaers away but it is good to know someone is trying to make it easier for all of us. More on wedneday from day two.

Gambling stinks though, I’m down about $25.00…………………………
