I grew up in Riverside, CA. My fathers lawn was a Bermuda hybrid called Santa Anna. Every one loved playing croquette in our backyard because the balls would actually roll straight. I now live in UT and just built a home. I would like to plant a 80 x 40 section of my backyard with a Bermuda hybrid so that I can play a good game of croquette but I dont know where to start. Can anyone help?
I am mostly concerned with what type of Bermuda grass will best withstand the Utah Winters (as low as 20° F for weeks at a time), how do I need to prepare my soil (it is mostly clay), when should I plant, and how long will it take to grow in?
If you can provide web resources and vendors of SOD or SOD plugs I would appreciate the help.

I would also be interested in other types of grass that would tolerate a very low mowing and that has a fine blade. I don’t know very much about grass but could I simply mow Kentucky Blue Grass at a very low level? This is the grass that 95% of the yards in Utah have.

You can plant Riviera seeded bermudagrass and be playing in 6 weeks. It is very winter tollerant, has a medium/fine blade and is a prefered grass for soccer. It is planted on the soccer field @ New Mexico State University, the NCAA champs. It can be purchased dircetly from the people that grow it @ johnstonseed.com
