Was wondering if anyone had any experience with the Pennington turf-type bermuda blend. I believe its Sydney, Mohawk and Yuma. I overseeded my existing U3 bermuda with Riviera and im afraid that mother nature may give me a slap in the face for trying to do this to early in the year. What I did was dethatch, aerate, mowed to 1/2 inch, seeded and fert. Then topdressed and rolled and followed proper watering for seeding. Soil temps were good at the time but in week 2 temps dropped and we got 3.5 inches of rain so I am concerned about losing the seed. If this happens my plan is to reseed later in May- early June with a cheaper blend after this years bumper crop of poa dies. I thought the turf type blend would be good for the money and was wanting to see if anyone had used it.

Well yes i have, but i just seeded it yesterday! So i guess we are both going to find out soon! My backyard is like one big, bermuda test plot,(with probably 15 different varieties) and i decided to try this type because i lost a bunch of turf due to sewer line work. This blend is called-‘Bermuda triangle’ in pro turf circles, and is supposed to be really good for fairways. We shall see! Its- sydney, sultan, and mohawk.

I can relate with the different types of bermuda! Good luck with the seed, will be intersted to hear of the results. I was told that the triangle blend had quick germination and good seedling vigor. Thats why I was intersted in it.

okgrassguy,It sounds like you did everything right. Riviera has both hulled and unhulled seed and is coated with with apron fungicide so it will wait for soil temps to warm up to some degree. The hulled seeds will sprout first and the unhulled portion will reqire more soaking to sprout the seed later. I wouldn’t push the panic button until after July,1.
Dr Richardson @ Arkansas University did a study comparing seeding dates in Feb,Mar,April,May and June. Surprisingly the Feb seeding date showed good results in the one years study. I have a powerpoint preasentation outlining the study but it is too lengthy to send on-line.

Thanks wrangler, Im kind of panic button happy! I think im also a little impatient. I seeded a bare portion of my back yard last year with sahara. I did this way too early in March. I did germinate fully after two months. It was actually a blend of Princess 77 and Riviera on the front. The seed is quite pricey, adding to my being too anxious. Also, should I continue daily watering or just normal watering for this time of year.

okgrassguy,Keep the surface moist until you get the stand you want. When you get runners appox. 1-2″ long allow the surface to dry out some and water once every 3-4 days, start nitrogen fertilizer program and address weed problems as they arise. Soil temps are approx. 30 days ahead of last year. Last year in Oklahoma we did not reach stable 65 degree soil temps until late May. Currently at 9:30 pm mesonet shows soil temps @ 67 degrees. You should start to see seedlings popping through this weekend.

Ok, i am starting to see a few little seedlings pop thru the cow shit! Its been the typical May here in San Diego….cool and overcast….so i was worried that i may lose all the seed! I used manure because its “hotter” than other top dressings, and this probably made the difference. I will post more updates as the turf matures.

Finally !!!! The triangle blend I put in the huge bare spot in the backyard has begun to sprout, and the Princess and Riviera in the front has begun to sprout.Now I can set back open a beer and watch grass grow.

Congratulations!! Its exciting to see new seedlings, and even more exciting to hear the crack of a brewski being opened! haha
