Dallas, TX – I installed 50 pc of Bermuda sod two days ago. The sod was in good shape (not great) when I laid it. To prepare the ground beneath, I added a 1/4-inch layer of top soil over some already baren, red clay.
As prepared as I was, I wasn’t prepared for the 100 degree day that followed. No one in Dallas was prepared for this day. Last year it snowed on Easter, so my point is that you can’t plan for anything here.
I forgot to set the clock on my sprinkler system ahead by an hour (fall forward) and I just now realized it. While advancing the clock, I inadvertently programmed it to water continously!!! Then I left home for the Easter weekend.
Returning today, I find a sod swamp in my backyard.
Question – should I worry about rot or disease?
Question – when should I water it again?
In the mean time, I’ve covered much of the yard in tarps in case we have another scortcher here tomorrow. I’ve also put out some Turfbuilder to help speed the process.
My kid’s backyard birthday party is in 5 days, so I urgently welcome any suggestions.
Question – should I be concerned about 50 people and a bounce-house in my yard for the weekend?

Well, there’s not much you can do- except let it dry as much as possible before the party. After the party you can start a normal type water schedule. Don’t cover the turf….. as this only causes more stress! Bermuda can handle all kinds of abuse, and will “bounce back” after the party.

Thanks, Tommy. I’ve removed the tarps as you suggested and there just might be hope. Much of the turf is suprisingly still green, but there are huge gaps between each piece! I filled the gaps with a bag of fast-growing mixed seeds, covered with about 2 inches of potting soil, and another heavy dose of Turfbuilder. I then airated(?) the sod with a rake, to help it dry.
Any ideas on starting the seeds? I read on another website about making a mini-greenhouse with plastic wrap and toothpicks. Supposed to be good for starting seed, but too much trouble if you ask me.
It’s 80 and rainy today, if that helps. Let me know your thoughts when you can, 3 days till the party!!

Hey guys. The turf is looking much better today. It was just long enough to mow for the first time. The potting soil turned out not to be a good idea, it dried out too quick. I should have used a heavier soil. The ground is still REALLY soft, I’m a little concerned about the party. The lawn mower made some pretty deep ruts, so imagine what 50 people will do!
Any ideas on how to dry a yard? Shop fans maybe? Is there equipment that I can rent? I read that cornmeal might work, it absorbs moisture and is supposed to be good for the soil. And it’s cheap!! Any thoughts on that?

You can topdress the area with sand if you want. Bermuda likes to be topdressed ,(its done on bermuda putting greens), and its a good way to protect the turf from heavy foot traffic. You can use bagged play sand (available at most garden centers, Home depot,etc). Spread it pretty heavy, but don’t completely bury the turf. Make sure there is still some grass blades visible thru the sand.
