Installed emerald zoysia 9 days ago. Temps have remained consistently above 85 degrees during the day. I've watered regularly and thoroughly with (what I take) to be good results. Though a bit patchy in places, all pieces seem to be rooting nicely. So...should I spoil my luck and fertilize? My local landscaper says to fertilize after ten days (i.e. tomorrow); however, I've come across a bewildering range of opinions on fertilizing. Perhaps I'm only asking for more of the same. But there appears to be seasoned experts on this site, and I'd love to hear from them. I've got a bag of Scott's (18-24-6) in the garage that I'll gladly spread down tomorrow. But should I? Oh, and while I'm hunting for advice: should I mow while I'm at it? It's 3" in some spots but not in others... Thanks! IP: Logged |

You can mow now if you want, but avoid scalping too much leaf off. Its hard to imagine Emerald at 3 inches tall, but the general rule is to not take any more leaf than 1/3 at a time. You can fertilize now at half rate. The bag should tell you what the recommended rate is.....so just cut that in half. Follow this rule any time the weather is warm. Turf does not like a ton of fertilizer dumped on it during warm conditions. IP: Logged |
