Please help. Our St Augustine is turning a lighter shade of green and appears to be thinning. What can I do?

I would not just go throwing fert out without any idea as to what the problem is. Pics would be nice, or take in a tissue sample. Could be chich bugs or brown patch (most common in St. Augustine) in which case fertilizer would not do much good. Where are these yellow areas? What is the shape and what are the conditions in these areas (i.e. wetter than others, more shade, less shade, hotter, etc.)?
