I am in the Lawn care business and need answers to why annual rye grass comes up and fades as the winter progresses. Noticed it always does well in shade. Am I seeding at a high enough rate-6 lbs per 1000. Will anything bring it back fast? Is it just a certain temperature that causes this in the open sun. DId the recent ice storm cause this? Please help and sure could use some definitive information that I can print off to show customers if needed, any good web sites for this??

Strick, I figure from your email address that you are in North Carolina. Annual ryegrass is, as the name would imply, relatively short lived. We use it in Florida for a quick cover crop. It would prefer to make seed, then die. Wouldn’t perennial ryegrass be a better overseeding for your area?
