I have a new St Auginstine lawn, sodded in Oct (04). I live in Central Texas and I would like to know when to treat for Grub worms and other lawn pest. I would also like to know when the best time to treat for weeds, crab grass, etc. would be for my lawn type and location.

For long term control of grubs, use a product called Merit in the spring, or when you see the june bugs or beetles flying around. Do this once a year and use a product called Dylox if you want a quick contact kill, as Merit is systemic and is more for long term control. Do you live closer to Austin or Fort Worth? It will be tough for you to control crabgrass here in your first year of sod since the best way to control it is a preemergent herbicide, and those can damage your sod roots. The best thing you can do is fertilize your sod when it comes out of dormancy in march or april and do that every 6-8 weeks as needed. Can’t do much about the weeds until it cools off in the fall.

in general, if the st. aug. is fertilized and maintained correctly, you won’t need that much in weed control, and should deal with weeds on a spot treat basis. soil test it, and follow the recommendations. where in central texas? there’s alot of variation on the weather types in the state and that can influence your management approach.
