I am building a house in the Kansas City, Kansas area and the builder is pushing to get the home done. I have told him I would not settle until all the outside work was done. He has sat on his hands for months and now with temperatures below 15 degrees, has begun sod installation. He has kept the sod for a couple of days now in an unheated garage (below freezing). I have told him I will not accept the installation because my fear is the sod does not have a chance. Am I right?

your sod does not have a chance. but in fairness to all parties, could you just escrow for the work to be done in the spring? pay him for the work he has completed, then hold back or discount out the sod work. easy solution.

I would not trust the builder. I would not cut him any slack. Just closed on my new house in early December – it was to be done in “late June or early July” per the builder originally. All builders are liars and crooks.

What kind of grass is the sod? Cool season grasses usually do best when put down in the fall, but you don’t want to be stuck with bare ground thru the thunderstorms of the summer. There’s a Lesco store in Olathe just off I-35…the guys there will give you good advice. Go to www.lesco.com and type in your zip code for their phone number and location. Good luck.
