Hey Gang!

Got a few questions for the experts and “ol’ timers” on the forums here.

Ok … here are the specifics.- Live in North Alabama- Bermuda – Tif-Way/Tifton variety- “new” sod (laid late summer/early fall last year)

I am starting to see Henbit, Wild Onions, and some other broadleaf weeds come up in this lawn. Can someone tell me what 2-4-D and MSMA is used for. I have heard of both chemicals being used in the controlling of weeds, but unsure of which chemical is used for which weed.

Also, what would you guys recommend as a pre-emergence for Crabgrass in my area and when should I put it out? I have heard of Balan, Halts, and several others … I am very new to this and am very very confused on what needs to be done.

Many Thanks!

24d is for broadleaf weeds like henbit, oxalis, dandelion- weeds with colorful flowers on them. msma is used for grassy weeds like crabgrass and dallisgrass, but isnt used as widely as it once was. pre-em can vary greatly, but the best ones you probably can’t buy as a homeowner. now is a great time for pre-em work in your market. try calling a professional lawn care company, they will be able to apply these products for you at a cheaper rate that you cando it yourself. most of them offer return trips free of charge if there’s a probably with the applciation, etc.

In my area Home Depot sells Lesco brand products, one of which is the pre-emergent.

I’ve been using these products for years myself and they are very effective.

they’re actually quite a few lesco products homeowners can buy, but none of the more restricted use products. lesco’s product for home depot is watered down, i believe. dimension and barricade are 2 pro strength products that you can’t purchase at your local hardware store. what you’re looking at when in the hardware store is primarily lesco pre-em and diluted versions of barricade, etc.
