The kikuya is mixed in with the rest of my lawn. I only want to get rid of the kikuya.

jbuckley, I am not aware of any chemical for selective control or removal of kikuyugrass from turf. There was some work done at the University of California-Riverside, and I’ll try to look up the details, and I believe there were some cultural variables. Are you in California?

When I lived in California back in the 70s, the State of California had road crews going around the state planting kikuya by the roadsides to stop erosion. At the same time, they had crews going around the roads spraying to kill kikuya because it was growing out onto the streets.

I’ve never seen the grass at work, but I understand it is quite tenacious. Could you spot treat with RoundUp mixed with some molasses and then sod over it after a few weeks when you’re sure you got rid of it?

It’s common practice where I live to just live with it. I am working on a project where we are just going ahead and planting kikuya, since that’s what it is going to turn into in ten years anyway.
As far as selectively removing it…yeah, you can try the roundup route. You will have dead spots that look terrible, until you overseed them.
If the infiltration is massive, then you may want to just get rid of the whole lawn and start over.
Just depends on what you can live with, and how much money you want to spend (or how much time and effort you can spare).

Use MSMA (crabgrass killer) for kikuyu control in other kinds of turf. (except St Augustine). It usually takes 3 applications (3 to 4 weeks apart) to get a good kill. It also needs to be done when the grass is actively growing.
