I live in Ky and my zoysia is not coming out of dormant. Only in small spots. The yard is about 3in or so. I went and drove around some of the golf courses and there zoysia is out of dormant. I went and rented a tri-plex mower so I could mow my dormant yard lower. I mowed it at 1in and then raked the dead grass up. Is my yard dead or is it going to green up. I just sodded the yard last year with El Toro. I need some advice.

you probably need to give it more time. have you fertilized it? you need to be fertilizing the zoysia now. you mentioned driving around the golf courses- you were probably seeing bermuda, not zoysia, so don’t get too concerned. you’re probably better off calling a local chemical lawn care company- there’s lot’s around your area. also see the Purdue web site- great articles on zoysia with great research. good luck

also when did you sod it?

I sodded it last May and it looked great all year. No, the golf courses I looked at has zoysia around there greens and the zoysia is green. So will my yard come back? I put down some pre-emerge down in late March that also had 21-0-21 in it. Today I put down some 10-10-10. Will this help?

what kind of pre-emergent did you use? zoysia is famous for not needing alot of fert.- how much fert. did you put down- give me your sq. ft. or acreage size and tell me how many bags of what size bag-i think you’re just not warm enough yet.

I put down RegalStar it has 21-0-21 in it. It goes out at 4.5 per 1000s. I put down one 50 pd bag. It rained that night so it got water in. It was warm about two weeks ago and then it been cool and windy. I put down some 10-10-10 last night to help kick the grass in I’m hoping. Why would my grass not grow while others has and they have zoysia?

tell me generally where you live and i’ll look up your temperatures

It’s 63 degreee right now and raining. We had two weeks in the high 70 and low 80 and now for the past week and half it been in the low 70 to high 60’s. If other people zoysia here have come out of dormant why hasn’t mine. Could it have been that I left the grass to tall for to long. I hoping that now that I have cut it and that when the weather warms up the grass will wake up.

i think you’ll be ok. you may have more shade or whatever that may be slowing you down- why don’t you wait a few weeks and see what happens. also, don’t be afraid to call a local chemical lawn care company- i’m sure they would be willing to give you a free estimate and advice

Ok guys, my yard started to come out in some spots, but here in the last week we might of had two days of nice weather, the others days it rained. Is this a good sign, meaning that once the weather warms up and sunny and no rain that my yard might be ok.
