Virginia Buttonweed in St. Augustine – need help

I resodded about 2 months ago, and now the entire area I put down is completely infested with Virginia Buttonweed.

Nobody around here (Lakeland, FL) can tell me how to get rid of it. I also put some sod down (from the same pallets purchased then) in the front yard. This had some buttonweed in it, but not nearly as much as the back yard, which is probably 95% infested now. I was able to control it in the front by picking it out by hand.

Is there anything I can use to get rid of and control this in the future? I saw some products mentioned (Hi-Dep and similar), but they were not usable in St. Augustine, if I am reading it right.

Also, the sod I put down did not seem to take. The only thing growing out of it is this buttonweed. The actual grass is brown and dry, regardless of water put on. Is there a possibility that this will come back in the spring, or do I need to resign myself to having it redone?

If I will need to re-do it, what is the best way to prep it after (hopefully) getting rid of the dreaded buttonweed? I not only need to get rid of it but need to prevent it from coming back.

Thanks so much!!!Sandi
