What is the best way to get rid of torpedo grass while maintaining my Floratam lawn?

The only thing you can do about torpedo grass is either move or dig it up and all the soil a foot below. Very intrusive, very hard to kill. Kill it with high doses of glyphosate (roundup), then dig all the dirt up and resod. A herbicide alone will probably not do it for ya.

Thanks for your response. I’m surprised about having to dig out so much soil. This stuff seems to run along the surface but gets so thick it chokes out the Floratam. I lived in Texas all my life before moving to Bradenton seven years ago. The variety of St. Augustine we had there seemed to choke out all the weeds if were kept healthy. I think we had Raleigh there (Houston).

Torpedo grass is so hard to kill because its roots are hardy and run deep. A couple of herbicides have it on their labels, but they say it will only supress it. Roundup knocks it back, but doesnt necessarily erradicate it. A shovel is the best weapon.
