I have St. Augustine grass in my yard in Birmingham, AL. We have had a fair amount of rain recently, but not too much, and the yard is slightly sloped and has good drainage. While working today I noticed a very large patch of greasy looking white stuff covering an area of about 8″ by 5″. It looks just like Crisco that has been cooked, cooled, and congealed. It is very slimy, disguting, but does not match the pictures of “slime mold” that I have seen. After looking, I found three other smaller spots. Not wanting to risk anything while I tried to identify it, I dug up to the root the affected areas.

Does anyone know what this is? Is it a fungus or did sopmeone throw some Crisco in the yard???

Sorry no picture – camera broken . Thanks!

yeah, generally if you don’t know what something is, just dig it up! seriously, i couldn’t imagine anything fungus wise on st. aug. this time of year especially in your location.you’re awfully far north for st. augustine, just wondering about switching to a more suitable grass for the area, can’t imagine it’s green for very long and could have substantial winter damage. would recommend tall fescue or bermuda.

Thanks Ted – I haven’t seen any more so I guess it’s OK. We actually have lots of St. Aug growing up here because we have brutal summers. My yard has too much shade for bermuda. Thanks again!
