I am looking for some advice on grass selection. I am re-doing my back lawn. I have started killed the existing grass off, and have new topsoil waiting in the wings.

I grew up outside NYC and had a zoysia lawn, but I find that now I am in the Pacific Northwest that zoysia is not recommended out here.

So my question is this – could I use zoysia out here (I am about 80% sun/20% shade – clay, but getting 4″ fresh topsoil over the 2″ or so I already have. It’s going to have kids & dogs on it, I have excellent drainage.)

If not zoysia, could someone recommend a similar grass that may work out here, preferably something I could get in plugs like the zoysia.

Thanks.

I would think cool weather grasses like perenial ryegrasses, bluegrasses, fall fescue, etc would work better since you live waaaaaaaaay up there. Ask your neighbors with nice looking yards what they are. I would imagine that it hardly ever get really hot up there. Zoysia likes hot weather.
