I live in central NC and have a very small yard with neighbors around each side. My front yard came sodded with I was told a Kentucky Fescue. It looks very nice – dark green when watered regularly and is slow growing which I like. The backyard however was a blank canvas that I have not done so well with. I have dead areas and all types of grass growing.
I want advice on how to kill off the grass and start over with a blank slate now or next year if need be (or some other option?). What process do I need to take to accomplish this? I don’t want to kill my neighbors grass. I only have about a 60′ x 60′ back yard which receives full sun for the most part.

Spray ‘Round up’ on the area, it only kills what it hits and won’t drift in the soil. After everything is dead, mow short and remove debris. If the soil is fairly level and not too hard, you can seed or sod without tilling. Many grass options are available for NC……including Zoysia,(very little mowing involved), and many types of Tall fescue, Bermuda’s, and centipede. If you can afford to sod, that would be your best option! Summer rains can wash away new seed, and your soil is probably full of weed seeds too! Sod will bury most of the weed seed!
