I have a month old zoysia sod installation in my back yard that is doing well except for the crabgrass.

I think it is too early to go for the gusto with a spray application of crabgrass killer – it might really hurt the zoysia.

My best idea is to use a sponge and wipe crabgrass killer along the top of the worst of the infestations. I’m sure I’ll get a little on the zoysia, but since the crabgrass is generally taller than the zoysia, that should keep most of the herbicide off the zoysia…

Any better ideas?

How big is your yard? Crabgrass is really easy to pull

Two other alternatives are:

1. Wet the crabgrass then sprinkle baking soda on it.2. Spray it with Image herbicide

A couple of responses:

1) The yard is 2,700 sf, and has far too much crabgrass to hand pull..

2) Image? I’ve got some, but is it too soon to apply it, since the sod has only been down for a month?

I just spot sprayed my newly seeded Zenith/Cathay with Ortho’s “Grass Be Gon”, active ingredient is ‘fluazifop’ aka Fusilade II for crabgrass/goosegrass. I used this product years ago for crabgrass invasion in ornamentals with excellent results and no injury to the good plants. Quite a few people on this forum have had success using it in Zoysia, mainly to suppress invading Bermuda.

Good luck

You have image and crabgrass. Soooo mix up a 1 pint spray bottle and go spray 10 or 15 SF worth and see what happens. Probably will kill the mean old Crabgrass.

Try the baking soda. I have read several times that it works and does not kill the grass.

Of course the easy alternative is live with Crabby grass until next year and put down a good pre-emergent.
