Can anyone help identify this grass type? I believe it to be St. Augustine, but not sure what type if that is even what it is.

Also if it is St. Augustine I would like to get it to take over my Centipede that looks terrible.

Any suggestions on what the best way to do this would be? Should I use plugs or Seed?

I have not seen any St. Augustine seeds available. Is there any good place to by the seed online?

There aren’t SA seeds available. There have been attempts to grow them but not very sucessful. If you’re going to plug, I would highly recommend that you get Palmetto variety pallet (450 sqft) and do a checkerboard plugging. If you can afford it. Use starter fertilizer as well to speed up root establishment. Also, get 50lbs bag of corn meal from feed store and spread 10-20lbs per 1000sqft to combat fungus. It couldn’t hurt to use 1cubic yard of compost per 1000sqft. Water 20 minutes or so everyday for a couple weeks and then gradually reduce number of watering per week and extending the time. Ideal watering would be one hour per week ONCE a week WHEN there is no rain. Check with the weather everyday to gauge how much rain you’d be getting so you’d know how much watering you need.

It probably sounds alot but you can’t just plug it in there and expect them to thrive without doing much.

it’s st. aug. —sod it.

I agree with Ted. St Augustine is cheap just sod it.

If you just cannot afford to do that kill the yard with roundup and then plug it on 4″ centers. A pre-emergent will help keep weeds out although it is awful late for pre-emergents.

Bbowers never said what size the yard is. If it’s small, sod entirely. If it’s big, well it’s costly. 450sqft per pallet runs around 125-130 dollars.

I’d say get Sir Walter variety but it’s in australia unfortunately. It’s really good saint augustine variety. Palmetto is probably the closest thing in USA at the moment. Actually, there’s a new SA on the way called Sapphire which is bred from Sir Walter. It won’t be available this summer unfortunately. I’ve seen the results and it looks pretty damn good when compared to Palmetto, Floratam, and Releigh. It will be the hottest thing to get next year!
