I am new to the whole yard thing, but I am in south ga and have about a half a acre I cleared 5 or 6 years ago. A year or so after I got it cleared a friend of mine gave me some sod pieces they had pulled up off a golf course. There was st augustine, bermuda, and a little centipede. Anyway I have never fertilized just kinda throw it in the yard and neglected it. Most of the bermuda died but see that the st augustine is growing although slow. I recently decided since it was trying so hard and I want a nice lawn now I would try and help it out. The yard has a ton of weeds in it and several bare spots. About two weeks ago I tossed some chicken shit on it than a week later I put some 16-4-8 on it and now it is all growing rapidly. The yard is filling in well but alot of it is weeds. Things such as dollar weeds and other unknown weeds which are better than dirt but I want to have the st augustine cover the entire the yard. Anyway my question is will the st aug choke out the weeds with time? I would throw some weed and feed on it but was told you have to wait till late winter to do that. Any suggestions llfoltzer@tech-fiend.com

In normal, lightly weed infested augustine, the grass will choke out and overtake errant weeds,if mowed often. However,if weeds are prevalant,a chemical program is advised, along with manually removing unwanted growth.I would suggest contacting your county agent for advise.Different weeds take different herbicides, and local soil types come into play also.
