I bought a pallet and a half of El Toro zoysia to put in my yard in the shady areas where the bermuda was thinning out due to the shade. I put the squares out in a checker board pattern to make the sod go further. I decided to seed the open areas in between the squares of the checkerboard pattern with companion zoysia. I have been watering the sod fairly heavy and kinda notice that the bermuda is creaping back in. Just curious of which grass is finally going to win out. Will the zoysia ever be able to take over the entire yard? Or will it just stay in the shady places? This is in West Texas btw.

Depends upon a lot of factors. The more fertilizer you add the more likely bermuda takes over. Zoysia needs less fertilizer and you can get a good green color with iron.

Fluazifop will control bermuda but not zoysia so you can spray with it to help convert to zoysia. Unfortunately, my guess is that you will have a mixed yard for a very long time.

Bermuda’s growth habit is about twice that of Zoysia. It will normally win a competition for bare spots., but the Zoysia will survive as well due to its density.
