Too much to mulch

Too much to mulch

I’ve got a YardMan walk-behind mulching mower. Most of the time when I cut, especially for a few weeks after fertilizing or a few days after rain, I have a really hard time mulching. The grass clipings clump up in the deck and lay on top of the grass surface. Sometimes it gets so bad that I have to side-discharge and rake later.

I can only reliably mulch with the mower at the highest height, but this is too high at 3.5-4″. I’m trying to cut to 2.5″, and this only takes off about an inch. Walking really slow doesn’t help, and I don’t want to mow more than once a week.

The mower was sold as a 3-in-1 (side-discharge, bag, mulch). Would there be any value in finding a mulch-specific blade?

I keep the blade sharp, checking it every few weeks.

I have a fescue/bermuda lawn in Winston-Salem, NC.

Thanks for the help,Adam

I would probably mow it twice depending on the size of your lawn. once on highest setting, and once on a lower setting.

Mulching is a great mowing technique. Provided its done correctly. If heavy growth is a problem then more frequent mowing is the answer. Raise the HOC and mow more often until growth slows down naturally. Or you can bag at peak growth mowing and mulch when growth is lighter. Either way, dont’t let the growth get out of hand!

Hope this helps…………..
