Have a previously (10 yrs.ago)bermuda sodded lawn in extremly poor condition. Had a few sod installers give me estimates to redo,and all seemed to want to spray old grass and rotortill. I have a couple of friends,who are not in the trade, tell me all I need to do is scalp old lawn ,fertilize and lay new sod on top. They said it worked fine for them . Your opinions wold be greatly appreciated. Thanx, Walt

You can sod without tilling if you choose a grass that has the type of root system that will bust through hard soil types. Bermuda, Zoysia, & Tall fescue are the first that come to mind! You must however make sure that the sod is grown on a soil similar to what you have in your yard. For example- don’t buy a sod that is grown in sand, and lay it on top of clay. This is a common mistake by many…….its called “soil layering”, and even the toughest grasses have trouble over coming this soil condition!
