This started popping up in my back yard and along the edge of my concrete driveway. It looks to be spreading by seeds. It is pretty soft and appears to be a grass, not a weed. My yard is mostly fescue, with some bermuda that hasn’t come out of dormancy yet. I’m in Winston-Salem, NC. Thanks.

atoner,It looks like a Poa Annua to me. Without it in my hand I cannot be 100% sure. There is a new herbicide on the market this year but I don’t think its available to home owners. If you can find a way to get rid of it then you can be a rich man. The seeds are everywhere. We treat as a weed when we can, and keep it alive when we have to.

Good Luck and Happy Easter

Atoner,

I have the very same stuff and it has formed large clumps in some traffic areas. I also had though it was Poa Annua (aka – annual bluegrass). I have a Bermuda lawn.

someone concurr on the description???

Cohiba,

So the big problems are that it will die in the winter and multiply quickly if not treated.

yeah it’s most definitely poa annua- will burn off as temps rise- it’s actually wild bluegrass. lesco has a product- it’s name escapes me too, but you can’t buy it as a homeowner. there was a fungicide (believe it or not) that used to control this weed called rubigan- don’t think you as a homeowner can buy it either-call a pro or just wait it out.

it’s called Kerb- but you can’t buy it.

To all, The new herbicide is made by Valiant and is called Velocity. Trials at Rutgers look great. The turf industry will be a little different if what they say is true: This stuff really works. Homeowners: Sorry your out of luck. I plan to use it on 30 acres of perennial rye fairways and 3 acres of rye tees in September. Its the most exciting thing I’ve come across since Heritage Fungicide.

The Lesco product maybe called Prograss. I know some that swear by it but am not convinced.

Take Care.

good advice, but isn’t velocity for use on bentgrass only?

ted – posted 12 April 2004 20:10

yeah , it’s for use on golf courses only. it’s not labeled for use on homeowner lawns. not sure of the damage issue, etc.

I don’t understand why, if the technology is available, these products are not made to homeowner strenght and made available. It is ludicrous to think that there is no market for a good product that works. You can do more damage with round up, even at homeowner strength, than you could do with alot of the chemicals we use. If there is concern about the amount of chemicals used then keep the prices a little higher. That way only the truly serious turf lover would consider its use. Just my two cents, I feel better now!

Take care….
