We have been in our new home (suburb of Houston)since November 2002. The new grass that the builder laid was not pretty (seemed dormant) at the time. I attributed the brownish-yellow color to the time of year it was laid. Since then, it hasn’t changed. It doesn’t even grow! I have NEVER seen St. Augustine NOT grow! We had to mow our lawn at our previous residence (same area) twice a week during the summer. The only reason we have to mow it now is because we have a few high sprigs here and there or a patch or two of crabbgrass. I don’t know what the problem is. We have put iron on it & fertilized. We have an automatic sprinkler system, we have always mowed on the highest mower blade, etc. I am baffled. I believe we didn’t get the best grade of grass from the builder but at this point, how do we make it grow and make it green? Thank you for any suggestions.

it might have been dead when it was installed. give it a few more weeks and you may have to replace it. i can’t recall any really low temps that would have caused an issue on it.

Have you used any compost on it? Compost at 1 cubic yard per 1,000 square feet might put it over the edge and start the growing process.

Otherwise it sounds like soil test time. Something is wrong.
