I’m getting ready to sod my yard with something sturdier than Marathon, but have heard various stories as to whether St. Augustine goes dormant in the winter. I live in Southern California where the temperature seldom gets below 40 degrees. Any recommendations?

St Augustine usually doesn’t go dormant in So.Cal…….but its not the greatest color either! Its kind of a light, pale green in the winter. You can give it a little better color by spraying liquid iron monthly. Also fertilize with a “winterizer” type fertilizer in late October- and again March 1st.

I’m convinced St Augustine does not have to go dormant at all. Last winter my next door neighbor’s lawn never turned brown and this winter, add my neighbor across the street to my short list. Both lawns are dark green and still growing/mowing while the ocean of St Aug lawns all over San Antonio are dormant.

Both of those neighbors are on an organic program, but so am I, so I’m puzzled about why theirs are still growing. We’ve had mild winters, but my winter is the same as my neighbor’s winter!!
