I believe I made a mistake laying St. Augustine sod this past weekend. I did a little research on the web and I read some articles that said you should overlap the sod pieces, and others that said you shouldn’t. I overlapped most of the pieces that I laid. When I finished the area was a little lumpy. I rolled the lawn a couple of times and the lumps went away slightly, but most of the lumps were still present. Did I make a mistake? If yes, is it possible to fix? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, you made a mistake. Yes, I would really try to fix it immediately if I were you – the alternatives to fixing it now are:
1) Dealing with a severely uneven lawn forever.
2)Trying to level the lawn next year with repeated topdressing.
Even with your rolling, I would suspect that you are having some areas dying with dry roots (air gaps) as we speak due to the overlaps – maybe not, but I wouldn’t be suprised.
I would not be thrilled with either of the above remedies.. I hate to say it, but I would immediately re-lay the sod. You may have smothered some of the sod on the overlapped areas, but it should fill in next year. You need to get it laid correctly very quickly so it can root well before winter. If someone has a better solution, I would be curious to hear it – this is probably going to be a massive pain in the behind for you no matter what you choose to do.
