I am a new home owner, I don’t have much experience about lawn. I was told that zoysias is a fast growing, care free type of grass. I would appreciate any information about what kind of zoysias grass will grow well in Grand Rapids Michigan and what is the adress of a good order grass seeds company. thank you.

Whoever told you that?

Zoysia is one of the slowest, if not THE slowest growing grass in the world. If you were to plug it in, for example, at 6 inch intervals, it might take 10 years to fill between the plugs. During that 10 years, you would likely have a fungus disease wipe out a good third of it for you, leaving you to contemplate another 10 years to fill the dead stuff.

I’d get 300 more opinions from your specific area before jumping into zoysia.

What is the dominant homeowners grass in your neighborhood? Get that.

Dchall gave good advice for that far north. Zoysia goes dormant and will be very slow in Michigan. Plus your yard will be brown alot. Zoysia spreads reasonably fast (fast being relative) here in florida – but it grows 10 months of the year (and so do the mosquitos!). Look in your neighborhood and find a good looking year and go with that type grass.
