imo, plugging takes just too much effort. especially with zoysia, since it will take so much time to get what you want…its like watching paint dry. just sod the darn yard and take care of it… its worth the little extra money and time. quit this plug crap, save your money until you can sod it, it makes the best sense(this is coming from someone who has lost 50% of his lawn after sodding) but any other way other than sodding is going to be a hughe baste of your time and money.

In theory, any homeowner can save piles of money on the cost of sod, by plugging. I’ve done it numerous times, but I realize that it requires a commitment to being a backyard sod farmer for 3-5 months, maybe a leave of absence from one’s family, up to 2 years in the case of zoysiagrass.

Despite these worthy sacrifices to save a few pennies per square foot, those of us who are really good at plugging don’t seem to be running out to operate sod farms, presumably because we find that we are better at doing something else for our day jobs.

Maybe if backyard sod farming was such a profitable enterprise, there would be more families doing it, so they could then cut the sod to sell to their neighbors, but I’ve never heard of that.

I have to chalk this up to a lot of other projects I have done, such as spending $80 in parts to install my own water heater, to avoid the $72 installation fee by Sears.

In my experience, plug only if you are on a budget and cannot spend for the full sods. Or if its in an area of your yard where you dont really care too much about, but would rather have grass than dirt.

I did 1/2 of my front lawn in sods, and 1/2 in plugs… the plugs, like mentioned earlier, you will have to keep on top of for about 3-5 months as he mentioned. you gotta make sure you keep the dirt at grass level and you gotta water daily til it starts to fill in, not to mention trim it when it grows tall also. im about halfway there with my sods, but ive been watching them and caring for them daily.

sod if its gonna be an important part of your yard…

Phil … you make me laugh partner. How well any homeowner knows that this is true stuff.

I hear lots of debates on St Augustine plugging vs St Augustine sodding and which one produces better results, and honestly, I am not sure that plugging does produce better results.

I have done both, and as I am preparing my back yard for St. Augustine, my thoughts are to just sod it and be finished so that I can move onto the next “honey do” list item.
