In a few months in central/south Florida will be time to maintain our abused winter lawns. Any hints on maintaining weeds, fertilizing, mowing St. Augustine lawns to keep it wonderfully green and weed free, would love to be the evny of the neighbors. Thanky your for any info.

I have over 40 years experience with St. Augstine grass. My advice is to plant trees that are native to your neighborhood. The resulting shade will, in time, reduce the stress on your lawn and on you. Buy a good chair and sit under the tree when it is grown and forget about the grass. My father-in-law did that and lived an active happy life to age 93. Competitive grass growing will age you prematurely.

The easiest way to fertilize and kill weeds is to use a combination product. You can find these at your nearest Lesco building. The cheapest to use in Pre-M plus fertilizer. You will probably find a 16-2-16 pre-m or something like that. That will kill your crabgrass and other spring weeds when it tries to germinate. Go to www.lesco.com and type in your zip code to find where your nearest lesco store is. The people there will give you a schedule of how to maintain your grass. Products usually cost between 15-23 bucks a 50# bag. Good luck.

So you wanna be the envy, huh?? I think seaboardair has the right idea and formula myself….and I am definitely gonna consider it over a tall one. But, if a healthy green lawn is what you are after…..try it organically. One of the guys who knows his organic stuff on this website gave me some great advice regarding lawns. I have S.A. lawns too, and I live ineastern Los Angeles County, California. In reality So. Cal is truely a desert terrain, but we gotta have our green lawns too. Until I can re-landscape to have just a tad less lawn to care for, I too enjoy being the envy of the neighbors.
Anyhow….the master on this site who gave the great advice is known as Dchall_San_Antonio. He had lots to offer, and one idea that I tried was using Texas Tee. WOW!!!! A completely organic lawn fertilizer that produced lots of lookie-loo’sof my lawns. It’s safe enough to use 4 or 5 times a year, and one bag covers a large area of lawn. The only bummer for me was the shipping cost to buy it was more than the cost of the product itself. It is only manufactured and sold in Texas. But I was very impressed and pleased with the results.The web address for the Tee is www.maestro-gro.com, they manufacture the stuff. Or check out www.fertilegarden.com, they sell it too.
Thoroughly check out the other forums on this site for other postings on S.A. lawn care. You can get a belly-ful. My friends all think I am nuts to be so interested in lawn care, but my grass is greener than theirs !!!!!!
