I have killed off my South West facing 1500 sq ft lawn here in San Diego and am preparing to overseed next weekend after thatching, aeriating and maybe tilling.

I am trying to choose the best grass.

Parameters:

- San Diego: hot, dry, sunny
- Want lawn ASAP, but no sod
- Children play on lawn
- SW facing, very intense sun/heat
- 1500 or so sq feet
- prefer soft blades to sharp

All this seems to point to Bermuda. What are my other alternatives, including pros and cons?

Will Bermuda go brown over the winter in San Diego? It stays quite warm here...

Depends on how cold it gets in California. I would recommend Zoysia. Low maintance and tolerates traffic well. It would be better to sod if you go with Zoysia, because it take about 2 years to fully establish. It would be about the same either way if you sodded or put down seeds. You're only looking at about 4 or 41/2 pallets

Depending on your definition of ASAP, your very likely going to be a bit disappointed in any grass you select.

Turfgrass lawns, sodded or not, require 2 things above all. Time and patience.

Also Considering one of the Bermuda tiff varieties for full sun, southwest exposure in east San Diego (hot) county

Any recommendations ?

Also, any extraordinary soil prep required ?

Thank you

My Bermuda stays fine over the summer months in San Diego. You should be okay with that.
