I have a thick lush, St. Augustine (not sure of the variety) lawn that is beginning to suffer under severe water restrictions in my New Port Richey, FL home. Although I love St. Augustine, I’m considering seeding in Bahia grass in hopes it will win out over the St. Augustine and give me a more drought resistant lawn. Will this work?

I am doing just the opposite. Bahia sucks. It thins out and never looked good. Always yellow and sparse. Stick with St. Augustine. If you do it anyway, seed it every year. I’ve heard that it will take over, but I wouldn’t count on it…

Thanks for the response. The bahia was going to be a real leap because I perceived it to be less green and more sparse. Now that the “rainy season” is supposed to be here, the St Augustine isn’t doing too bad. I still think I’m going to go with less grass and more draught resistant landscaping.

i work in the pest control and fert industryin the pasco cty area.i see no problem with mixing the grasses except… the st aug will choke out the bahiawhen the rains comealso you will need to be carefull with weed killers as some will damage different varieties of grassesi have 16 years experience in this fieldand help manage several thousand accounts.you should try to train you st aug lawnto 1x per wk watering fix and adjust sprinklers and applyat least 1 inche of water on your one day allowednot 1/2 inche in the morn and 1/2 in evening1 inche per wateringif you need more info
