I hired Chemlawn to take care of my acre of centipede sod. They promptly applied lime last fall and now half of my sod is dead.

Anyone have any tips?

darrell, don’t neglect the possibility of centipedegrass decline. Several other posters on the Turfgrass Forums have mentioned similar problems in centipede this month (April, 2002).

Never use Lime on your Centipede grass. It will kill it. You need to call a Centipede Sod grower and they will tell you what to put on it to salvage it. (800) 634-1672

Why/how does lime kill centipede? Just curious. Have 2 year old centipede-sodded lawn and never knew lime would destroy the lawn!

centipede likes acidic soils. lime is totally opposite of acid. this is why your lawn had such a hard time.

That’s right. They only grow in acidic soil. One more reason not to use Chemlawn. It seems far too many are screwing up lawns. They don’t know what they’re doing and they charge a lot money. All you had to do was take several weekends to do it your self and save a lot of money. it’s not that hard to do it once you learn one or two thing about taking care of your lawn. It’s unfortunate that a lot of people are falling into that trap thinking they’re the best thing for the lawn.

Centipede needs a neutral to acidic soil to do well. Sounds like they screwed up big time.

Darrell, what was the starting pH of your soil?

Yea, me and my neigbor had Chemlawn take care of our grass for one year and they almost killed all of our grass. I fired them and told them never to come into my yard again. The neighbor did the same. I heard they did that to a lot of centipede grass around here

I want to get rid of my centipede that has almost eridicated my fescue lawn and is now invading my flower bed of dianthis. Would a good dose of lime do the trick?
