I have just cleared my front yard down to bare soil. I still have some soil preparation to do before I can sow seed. I’m going to sow bermuda. Since bermuda doesn’t germinate until late spring I want to make sure my soil doesn’t wash away. If I sow winter rye will it cause me any problems getting my bermuda started in late spring?

First some terminology. Rye is a winter small grain that is sometimes used in flour and is also a forage. Ryegrass is a turf species, e.g., Perennial ryegrass and annual or Italian ryegrass.

If you are going to sow ryegrass this close to bermudagrass planting time, seed very lightly, especially if you expect heavy rain. Otherwise, if late spring for you is just around the corner, you might wait.

Straw mulch is a good product for temporary soil protection.
